Someone once said, “When life gives you Monday, dip it in glitter and sparkle all day.” To that, most of us would likely respond with a resounding, “Mondays? Meh.” No matter how much glitter and sparkle you add—likely in the form of caffeinated beverages—Mondays are hard. Motivating yourself is already a difficult task, but when you’re also responsible for buoying up your work team, the beginning of the week can feel even more overwhelming. Put them together, and a creative Monday motivation that keeps people engaged is difficult to come by.
The team at GuideCX continuously works to thwart the Monday mayhem, instead opting for an inspiring start to the week. To kick things off in a positive direction, we’ve transformed our typical, often-report-heavy Monday morning meetings into a company-wide rally where we celebrate success, share inspiring stories, and report on the state of the company.
When looking for ways to get the week started off right, we recommend these three creative Monday motivation ideas to help shake off the back-to-work blues.
Jam Out to Energy-Boosting Songs
Many of us pop in our earbuds and crank up the music when we are running on the treadmill or powering through the hour on the elliptical, trying to keep pace and reach our fitness goals. Naturally, music should have the same motivational power when at work.
“No matter what environment you’re in, you’re more likely to reach a certain goal, whether it’s meeting a deadline or prioritizing tasks, if you have music to give you a positive push,” according to The Undercover Recruiter. “A chirpy, upbeat and feel-good song could give you the drive to apply yourself and your skills more effectively.”
In addition to encouraging employees to create their own inspiring work playlist, why not select a song of the month that can be piped through the building on a Monday morning. Here are some of our favorites:
- “All I Do is Win” by DJ Khaled
- “This is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan
- “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey
- “Harder Better Faster Stronger “ by Daft Punk
- “We Can Work It Out” by the Beatles
- “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)” by AC/DC
- “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor
Warning: These songs may trigger amazing impromptu dance parties.
Feed the Mind and Body
Dangling a carrot in front of a slow horse will invariably get him trotting at a much faster clip. The same principle applies to your employees. Food has been proven time and again to be a delectable workplace motivator, whether that food is in the form of a well-stocked breakroom or regular corporate-funded meals.
Of 100 employees and office managers surveyed by Zerocater.com, 90 percent said office meals and snacks helped employees build stronger internal relationships, and 60 percent ranked office food among the top three company perks.
With such a positive reaction to company-provided food, a hosted Monday morning breakfast for the entire team would be a great way to kick off the week. Even if it’s just a selection of bagels, donuts, or fresh-baked muffins and coffee, feeding the troops regularly will likely result in a busier, more productive team. The possible sugar rush doesn’t hurt energy levels either.
Stretch It Out
Want to get everyone on your team firing on all cylinders early in the day? Try starting with some heart-pumping and stretching exercises. Even if your employees have regular access to a gym or fitness room, there’s something even more exhilarating about joining your coworkers in a short exercise routine.
Since the mid-1920s, Japanese workers have been participating in “rajio taiso,” or radio calisthenics. Gathering together as an entire company, they all perform a short exercise routine. Taught to every person in Japan when they are in grade school, the three-minute, 13-move routine is designed to activate the entire body. As the BBC has reported, “As familiar as a nursery rhyme, [rajio taiso routines] remain a society-wide daily regimen which will surely continue to brighten people’s mornings for generations to come.” Sounds like the perfect Monday motivation to us.
Whether you prefer to pump up your troops through mood-boosting music, filling their bellies, or activating them through exercise, Monday mornings no longer need to be dreaded. With some clever ideas, everyone’s workweek can get off to a fantastic start with a simple Monday motivation.
